Radiation and radioactivity levels are constantly being measured and monitored to ensure a safe environment around nuclear power plants. The conduct of such surveys is known as environmental radiation monitoring.
Fukui Prefecture and nuclear power operators have installed monitoring stations (monitoring posts) in a total of 106 locations around the prefecture’s nuclear power plants to constantly measure radiation in the atmosphere.
Samples of soil, water, agricultural produce, marine produce, and other items are also periodically collected around the power plants to measure the levels of radioactivity they contain.
The measurement results and analyses are evaluated by the Fukui Environmental Radiation Monitoring Council, which consists of expert technicians, and confirmed by the Fukui Prefecture Nuclear Power Environmental Safety Management Council, which consists of representatives from the prefecture and related cities, towns and organizations. Afterwards, they are released to the general public via reports and the Internet.
